Leapmotor, the rapidly expanding Chinese EV maker, is evaluating the launch of its smaller and more affordable B03X (also known as the A10 in China) in Australia. This move would position the vehicle as a direct competitor to the BYD Atto 2, currently Australia’s most affordable electric SUV.
Expanding Lineup Down Under
Stellantis Australia’s product manager, Rick Crichton, confirmed that the B03X is “something that’s being considered.” Leapmotor already sells the B10 in Australia, priced from $38,990 drive-away, undercutting rivals like the MG S5 EV. The B03X would likely become Leapmotor’s most accessible model, especially if offered with an extended-range powertrain similar to other models in the lineup.
Naming Confusion and Future Models
Leapmotor’s international naming strategy has raised some confusion, with the A10 being rebranded as the B03X for export markets. Crichton acknowledged this inconsistency but expressed trust in Leapmotor’s long-term planning. The company is also developing larger D-series models, including a potential three-row SUV that could rival the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9.
The B05 Hatch on the Horizon
Beyond the B03X, Leapmotor has confirmed the Australian release of the B05 electric hatch, a Volkswagen Golf-sized rear-wheel-drive model. It’s expected to arrive in the second half of the year and may compete with the MG 4 as Australia’s cheapest electric hatchback. Pricing details remain undisclosed, but Crichton hinted at a competitive position.
Electric Ute Under Study
Leapmotor is also exploring the feasibility of an electric ute for markets like Australia, where demand is high. Executives have confirmed that the company is aware of the potential for such a vehicle, and Crichton indicated that it would be well-suited for the Australian market.
B03X Specs and Positioning
The B03X measures 4200mm in length, making it smaller than the Atto 2. It claims a range of up to 500km under the more lenient CLTC standard (around 425km WLTP), powered by a high-density lithium iron phosphate battery. The vehicle includes advanced driver-assist systems with LiDAR technology and an AI-powered cockpit with over-the-air software updates.
Leapmotor’s aggressive expansion strategy positions the brand as a serious contender in the Australian EV market. The company aims to offer affordable, well-equipped electric vehicles to both first-time buyers and those seeking a secondary commuter car. The introduction of models like the B03X and B05 will intensify competition, potentially driving down prices and accelerating EV adoption across the country.
