Let’s get the obvious out of the way first. The only reliable way to pass a breathalyzer test is to keep your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) below the legal limit. Don’t drink to excess. Simple.

But let’s play devil’s advocate. Say you’ve had one too many and you’re suddenly facing a sobriety checkpoint. You’re looking for loopholes. You’re looking for ways to trick the machine. Specifically, you want to know if sucking on a penny can lower your BAC reading. It’s a classic urban legend. It’s persistent. It’s also completely false.

The Penny Theory Falls Apart

The story goes like this: hold a copper-plated zinc penny in your mouth. Chew it. Suck on it. The theory claims that the metal reacts with your saliva or the alcohol in your mouth to neutralize the ethanol before you blow into the device. Some versions even suggest that more pennies equal a lower reading, provided you spit them out discreetly before the officer approaches.

Here’s the flaw. Breathalyzers don’t measure the alcohol sitting in your mouth. They measure alcohol in your deep lung air.

Modern devices use infrared spectroscopy. A beam of light passes through your breath sample. Alcohol molecules absorb specific wavelengths of that light. The sensor detects the change in intensity. It calculates your BAC based on that absorption.

You could coat your entire oral cavity in pennies, copper wire, and zinc filings. It wouldn’t matter. The machine is looking for ethanol vapor diffusing from your bloodstream into your alveoli. Surface-level tricks cannot interfere with deep-lung chemistry.

Portable Breathalyzers Have Evolved

Why does this myth persist? Because older breathalyzers were different.

Decades ago, some devices relied on chemical reactions within a solution. Alcohol changed the color of a chemical compound. In those primitive systems, introducing foreign substances into the mouth might have interfered with the sample collection or the chemical reaction.

That era ended. Law enforcement and manufacturers upgraded their technology to prevent manipulation. We are talking about a decade or more since any “gimmick” actually worked on standard police equipment. The idea that you can fool a modern infrared breathalyzer with a piece of currency is outdated. It’s folklore, not science.

Other Urban Legends That Don’t Work

If pennies aren’t the answer, what else are people trying? You’ve likely heard these suggestions. They all fail for similar reasons. The breathalyzer measures blood-derived alcohol vapor, not surface conditions in your mouth.

Mouthwash and Breath Sprays

Many commercial mouthwashes and sprays contain ethanol. Using them right before a test does not mask the alcohol. It adds more fuel to the fire. The machine detects the high concentration of alcohol in your immediate breath, leading to a falsely elevated reading. You aren’t lowering your BAC. You are contaminating the sample with external alcohol.

Strong Foods and Breath Mints

Chewing mint or eating garlic might cover the smell of alcohol. It does not change the chemical composition of your breath. Officers are trained to smell intoxication, yes, but the breathalyzer doesn’t care about your scent profile. It cares about molecular absorption. If your blood alcohol is over the limit, your breath alcohol will be over the limit. Mints won’t change that.

Hyperventilation and Exercise

Some drivers think that hyperventilating or doing jumping jacks right before the test will dilute the alcohol in their lungs. Or that holding their breath will trap the alcohol in their stomach. Both are incorrect.

Breathalyzers are calibrated to sample from the deep end of the lungs, where the air is in equilibrium with the blood in your capillaries. Shallow breathing or exercise might slightly alter the volume of air, but it does not significantly change the concentration of alcohol molecules in that deep-lung sample. Your blood alcohol content dictates your breath alcohol content. Physiology doesn’t let you cheat it with quick breathing.

Water and Food Dilution

Drinking water or eating a heavy meal might slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream initially. But by the time you are pulled over and asked to blow, the alcohol is already in your system. The breathalyzer measures what is coming out of your lungs, not what is lingering in your stomach. Dilution in the digestive tract does not equate to dilution in the bloodstream at the moment of testing.

The Only Real Strategy

There is no hack. There is no side door. The technology is designed to be robust against interference. It measures a physical property of your breath that is directly tied to your blood chemistry.

If you want to avoid the legal consequences, the humiliation, and the technical difficulty of trying to outsmart a sophisticated device, control your intake. Drink responsibly. Know your limit. Stop before you reach the line.

Anything else is just a story you tell yourself while driving home in the dark.
