GAC has begun accepting pre-orders for its Hyptec A800, a new extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) that integrates Huawei’s advanced autonomous driving technology. The vehicle features Level 3 (L3) highway autonomy, a long-range powertrain, and a tech-forward interior, marking a significant step in China’s automotive innovation.

Cutting-Edge Autonomous Features

The Hyptec A800 is equipped with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 4.0 Ultra autonomous driving system, allowing for L3 highway driving at speeds up to 120 km/h. This is the first vehicle in China to receive approval for L3 high-speed testing at this level, demonstrating a substantial advance in self-driving capabilities within the country. The car utilizes 34 sensors, including 4D millimeter-wave radar, high-resolution cameras, and solid-state LiDAR, ensuring a comprehensive perception of its surroundings.

The vehicle also features unique lighting cues, including three-sided flip-up headlights that indicate driving mode (autonomous, normal, or parked). Its million-pixel intelligent projection headlights support nine different lighting patterns, enhancing both safety and aesthetics.

Design and Performance

The A800 boasts a sleek exterior design common among modern Chinese EVs: a closed front grille, integrated headlight/taillight strips, and a low drag coefficient of 0.275 Cd. Its dimensions are 5130/1966/1500 mm (length/width/height) with a 3020 mm wheelbase. The vehicle’s most striking design element is its 6,536 mm interior ambient lighting strip—reportedly the longest in any production vehicle.

The powertrain combines a 1.5T 118 kW (158 hp) range-extender engine with a 35.027 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. This setup provides a WLTC pure electric range of 178 km, though detailed electric motor specifications and the total range remain undisclosed at this time.

Interior Tech and Comfort

Inside, the A800 features a minimalist cabin layout dominated by a 12.3-inch instrument panel and a 15.6-inch central touchscreen. Huawei’s HarmonySpace 5 infotainment system powers the interface, complemented by active noise cancellation, a 27-inch W-HUD (windshield head-up display), and the aforementioned extended ambient lighting.

The vehicle will be available in six exterior colors: Crystal Purple, Arctic White, Matte Moonlight Gray, Moonlight Gray, Obsidian Black, and Electric Silver.

The Hyptec A800 represents a convergence of hardware and software innovation, with GAC and Huawei collaborating to deliver a competitive EREV sedan. This vehicle demonstrates how Chinese automakers are rapidly integrating advanced technologies, potentially reshaping the global EV landscape.
