The updated Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV is now available in the UK, starting at £37,665 – almost £1,000 less than the previous model. The mid-life refresh brings bolder styling and an improved interior, positioning it more directly against key competitors like the Volvo XC40, BMW X1, and Audi Q3.
Trims and Specifications
Alfa Romeo has simplified the trim lineup, dropping the base ‘Sport’ model. The entry-level ‘Tonale’ now includes standard features such as matrix LED headlights, a redesigned ‘Scudetto’ grille, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, buyers get part-leatherette upholstery, dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.25-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Adaptive cruise control and a reversing camera are also standard.
Stepping up to the Ti trim, priced from £41,265, adds premium features expected in this segment. This includes darkened exterior accents, larger 18-inch wheels, heated and cooled leather seats (available in black or red), a heated steering wheel with aluminum paddle shifters, and built-in navigation.
For those seeking a sportier look, the range-topping Veloce starts at £43,565. This trim features 19-inch wheels, red Brembo brake calipers (on plug-in hybrid models), and twin exhaust outlets. Adaptive suspension is also available, allowing drivers to choose between a comfortable or performance-focused ride.
Limited-time buyers can also opt for the Sport Speciale, priced from £42,870. This package includes 20-inch wheels, a gloss-black and silver bodykit, and black and white Alcantara seats. Despite the upgrades, it remains cheaper than the Veloce.
Engines and Powertrains
The Tonale retains its existing engine options: a mild-hybrid petrol engine and a plug-in hybrid variant. The mild-hybrid produces 173 bhp and drives the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, reaching 62 mph in 8.5 seconds with a combined fuel economy of 49.6 mpg.
The plug-in hybrid delivers 265 bhp with all-wheel drive, accelerating to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds. The 15.5 kWh battery provides up to 38.5 miles of electric range. Both engines remain unchanged from the pre-facelift model.
Exterior and Interior Updates
The most noticeable changes are upfront, where the Tonale receives a subtly reshaped ‘Scudetto’ grille inspired by the brand’s 33 Stradale supercar, featuring concave slats within a floating frame. The lower bumper is more aggressive, and the car now appears to have a wider, more focused stance. New exterior color options include Rosso Brera (red), Verde Monza (green), and Giallo Ocra (yellow).
Inside, the center console features a smaller rotary gear selector, replacing the old lever, while aluminum paddle shifters remain. New trim options and contrasting stitching refresh the cabin. The 10.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system is retained, offering media control, navigation, and smartphone mirroring. Physical climate controls, a DNA drive-mode switch, and a volume roller are also still present.
The 12.3-inch digital driver’s display now offers a ‘heritage’ layout inspired by classic Alfa Romeo models from the 1970s, alongside full map views and trip information.
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale combines aggressive design with a competitive price point. The revisions make it more attractive against its German and Scandinavian competitors, while the powertrain options cater to both fuel efficiency and performance preferences.
