You check these numbers before you buy a used Honda or a new Ford. They are the standard metrics. But there is a number that rarely gets mentioned in dealership conversations or online reviews. It doesn’t show up in the flashy marketing brochures.
It is the gross axle weight rating, or GAWR.
This limit is critical. It applies to every vehicle you drive. Cars. Trucks. SUVs. RVs. If you don’t know your GAWR, you are driving blind when it comes to axle capacity.
What Is Gross Axle Weight Rating?
The GAWR definition is simple but strict. It is the maximum weight determined by the manufacturer to sit on a single axle.
Front and rear axles have different ratings. They are not interchangeable. You cannot treat the front and rear of your car the same way. The automaker sets these limits based on engineering specs. Load an axle beyond its listed GAWR and you are in trouble.
Here is where people get confused. The GAWR isn’t just about the weight of the vehicle itself. It includes everything.
Passengers.
Cargo.
The weight of the vehicle.
Trailer tongue weight, if you are towing.
All of that mass distributes across the two axles. The manufacturer calculates the maximum allowable limit for each one individually.

By 2007, the RAV4 spec jumped. Suddenly, the front could take 4,430 lbs and the rear 4,730 lbs. That’s a massive increase. Did Toyota change the chassis? Or was the previous year’s data incomplete? Where to Find the Missing Numbers
You won’t find them in brochures. They’re in the Owner’s Manual or the Door Jamb Sticker.
Look for the sticker on the driver’s side door frame. It lists:
– GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)
– Front GAWR
– Rear GAWR
This is the legal limit for that specific VIN.
If you can’t find the sticker—faded paint, accident damage, previous owner removed it—then you’re stuck with estimates.
