Lexus Shifts Strategy: The All-Electric ES Arrives in the UK This June

5

Lexus is set to redefine its luxury sedan lineup with the launch of the eighth-generation Lexus ES. Arriving in the UK this June, the new model marks a significant strategic pivot: while much of Western Europe will still have access to hybrid powertrains, the UK market will receive an exclusively electric version of the car.

Starting at £59,345, the new ES aims to compete directly with established luxury heavyweights like the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series.

A Tailored Approach for the UK Market

The decision to skip hybrid engines in the UK reflects a broader shift in consumer behavior. As the UK market trends more aggressively toward Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) compared to its European neighbors, Lexus is streamlining its offering to meet local demand.

While European customers can choose between a 199bhp hybrid or two electric options, the UK lineup will launch with a single, focused specification:

The UK Specification: Lexus ES 350e

  • Powertrain: Front-wheel drive with a single 221bhp motor.
  • Battery: 77kWh lithium-ion.
  • Range: Approximately 329 miles (pending official WLTP confirmation).
  • Performance: 0–62mph in 8.2 seconds.

While the initial launch is limited to this single model, there are indications that a more powerful, dual-motor, four-wheel-drive ES 500e —boasting 338bhp and a 5.7-second sprint to 62mph—may join the UK lineup at a later date.

Refinement and Design: A New Philosophy

Built on the GA-K platform (the same foundation used for the Lexus NX SUV), the new ES has grown significantly. It is now 5.14 meters long —an increase of 165mm over its predecessor—providing a more commanding presence on the road.

Lexus engineers have focused heavily on “ride quality, comfort, and quietness,” increasing chassis rigidity to ensure the car feels more agile and responsive despite its larger dimensions.

Interior and Technology

The cabin represents a radical departure from previous generations, moving toward a minimalist, tech-forward aesthetic heavily influenced by design trends in the Chinese market. Key features include:
Central Interface: A large, 12.3-inch touchscreen serves as the primary control hub.
Haptic Controls: A row of illuminated haptic switches is tucked beneath the screen for intuitive use.
Luxury Focus: Higher trim levels, such as the Takumi (£72,545), prioritize passenger experience with features like heated, vented, and reclining rear seats.

Pricing and Availability

The ES will be available in three distinct trim levels starting from May 1:
1. Premium: £59,345
2. Premium Plus: £68,245
3. Takumi: £72,545

The new Lexus ES signals a transition toward pure electrification in the UK, prioritizing a high-tech, minimalist luxury experience to compete in an increasingly electric premium segment.
