Leaked images circulating online have provided the first full look at Volkswagen’s upcoming ID. Polo electric hatchback, including the high-performance GTI variant. The reveal comes ahead of the vehicle’s official debut in Europe later this year, offering a preview of a model not yet confirmed for Australian release.

Design and Trims

The leaked images, originally posted on Instagram before being removed, showcase three distinct trims of the ID. Polo. The base model is finished in yellow, featuring minimalist exterior styling with a contrasting horizontal bar across the front and black accents on the mirrors and windows.

An up-spec gray version boasts larger alloy wheels, while the flagship red ID. Polo GTI stands out with a GTI-branded front bar, a unique honeycomb front bumper, and an illuminated light bar spanning the front fascia. These designs closely follow the ID.2 All and ID. GTI concepts unveiled in 2023, signaling Volkswagen’s intent to leverage existing branding for its electric vehicles.

Technical Specifications

The ID. Polo will utilize Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform and offer front-wheel drive configurations with varying powertrain options. European models will begin with a 37kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery paired with either 85kW or 99kW motors.

A more powerful configuration will feature a 52kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery, delivering up to 450km of range (WLTP) and supporting 130kW DC fast charging. The ID. Polo GTI combines this battery with a 166kW motor for enhanced performance.

Pricing and Market Position

Volkswagen has announced a starting price of €25,000 (~A$41,500) for the ID. Polo in Europe, approximately €5,000 (~A$8,300) more than the base petrol Polo. This reflects the higher cost of electric vehicle technology.

The current petrol Polo in Australia begins at $30,990, with the GTI priced at $41,990. The implementation of the upcoming EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement may impact pricing and availability when the ID. Polo eventually reaches Australian shores.

The ID. Polo represents Volkswagen’s strategic shift towards electrifying its iconic nameplates rather than introducing entirely new EV branding. The leak provides an early glimpse into this transition, showcasing a blend of familiar design cues and next-generation technology.
