Lexus Australia is recalling close to 800 of its luxury off-road vehicles, the GX and LX, due to a potential defect in their twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engines. The recall impacts models produced within specific timeframes between late 2022 and early 2024. This latest issue follows a previous recall concerning the LX600 model where engine replacements were undertaken as a precautionary measure.
The faulty engines, specifically identified as the V35A variant, may contain machining debris from the manufacturing process that wasn’t fully removed. This debris could potentially lodge within the crankshaft bearings, leading to potential engine problems under heavy load. Affected vehicles might exhibit symptoms such as knocking noises, rough running, starting issues, or even complete stalls while driving.
Lexus acknowledges the seriousness of this issue, stating that an engine stall at higher speeds significantly increases the risk of a collision due to loss of power. While Lexus hasn’t yet detailed the precise remedy for these vehicles, they assure customers that they are actively developing a solution and exploring all available options to repair affected SUVs as quickly as possible.
The company previously addressed a similar engine defect in certain LX600s manufactured between December 2021 and October 2022 by replacing the engines entirely at no cost to owners. This precedent suggests that engine replacement may also be considered for the latest recall, although Lexus Australia hasn’t confirmed this yet.
Despite ongoing work on a permanent solution, Lexus advises owners of affected vehicles that it is currently safe to continue driving them. However, they urge drivers to contact their local dealership immediately if they experience any concerning noises or performance issues.
Lexus Australia has committed to contacting all registered owners of the affected vehicles directly and will provide further details regarding the remedy once finalized. In the meantime, customers can reach out to their dealerships or the Lexus Customer Assistance Centre for any inquiries related to this recall.
