Nissan Rogue Recalls: Engine Issues Affect Over 640,000 SUVs

Nissan is recalling over 642,000 Rogue SUVs (model years 2023-2025) due to two separate, but related, engine problems. The issues center around the vehicle’s 1.5-liter VC Turbo engine, which has already been subject to prior recall efforts.

Electronic Throttle Chamber Failure

The first recall (26V081) addresses a critical flaw in the electronic throttle chamber (ETC) assembly. A software glitch in the engine control module (ECM) can cause a diagnostic test to weaken and fracture a key gear within the ETC. This failure can prevent drivers from shifting into gear, resulting in sudden power loss and potentially leaving the vehicle immobilized. Some vehicles may have already received fixes under previous recalls, but all affected units will require inspection.

Engine Bearing Degradation

The second recall (26V080) stems from ongoing investigations into engine bearing failures. Last year’s recall focused on a primary cause, but Nissan has now identified another contributing factor: excessively high engine oil temperatures. These elevated temperatures degrade the oil’s lubricating properties, increasing the risk of bearing seizure and catastrophic engine failure.

What Nissan Will Do

Nissan will notify vehicle owners via mail starting late next month. Dealers have already been informed. The fix involves ECM reprogramming in all cases, and some vehicles will also require inspection of the engine oil pan for metal debris, indicating existing bearing wear.

Why This Matters: The Rogue is Nissan’s best-selling model, making these engine issues particularly significant. The fact that Nissan has identified a second contributing factor to bearing failures suggests a deeper, systemic problem that requires thorough attention. These recalls underscore the importance of continuous investigation and proactive correction of defects to protect consumers.

The recalls will be conducted in two phases: first, addressing the ETC issue, and second, dealing with oil degradation. Owners should expect to receive notices within the coming weeks and are advised to schedule service appointments promptly.
