Toyota Recalls Over 140,000 Priuses Due to Unexpected Door Opening Risk

Toyota is recalling 141,286 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles (model years 2023–2026) because of a defect that could cause rear doors to unexpectedly open while driving. The issue stems from faulty electrical door-locking switches that are susceptible to water damage, potentially leading to a short circuit and unintended door release.

The Problem: Water, Switches, and Open Doors

The affected vehicles have rear door locking switches with seals designed to prevent water intrusion. However, these seals can fail, especially if exposed to significant amounts of water – such as during a car wash or heavy rain. Slamming doors shut may also exacerbate the issue, allowing water and cleaning agents to bypass the seal. If water reaches the switch’s internal electrical components, it can cause a short circuit.

According to recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), if the door is unlocked during a short circuit, it may open unexpectedly. While Toyota reports that only three warranty claims have been filed and no accidents have occurred due to this defect, the risk of passenger injury remains a concern. The vehicle will display a warning light and chime, but these may not prevent the door from opening.

What Toyota Owners Need to Know

Toyota will notify owners of affected vehicles by March 29, 2026, instructing them to bring their cars to an authorized dealership for inspection and repair. Dealers will fix faulty door switches to prevent unintended activation in the event of water damage.

The recall applies to both standard Prius hybrids and plug-in hybrid (Prius Prime) models produced between 2023 and 2026. Owners can check their vehicle’s eligibility through Toyota’s service website or by contacting their local dealership.

This recall highlights the importance of quality control in automotive electrical systems, particularly in components exposed to environmental factors. While the defect has not yet caused widespread incidents, the potential for serious injury underscores the need for immediate corrective action.
