Subaru has launched a highly exclusive, performance-focused edition of its BRZ sports coupe: the STI Sport Type RA. This limited-run model, currently available only in Japan, elevates the BRZ experience with race-derived mechanical upgrades and aggressive styling. Production is capped at just 300 units, making ownership dependent on winning a customer lottery.
Engine and Mechanical Enhancements
The STI Sport Type RA features a modified 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine, adapted from Subaru’s BRZ CNF race car used in the Super Taikyu Series. The engine’s internal components—pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, flywheel, and clutch cover—have been refined to minimize weight and rotational imbalances, delivering a smoother, more responsive driving feel.
Beyond the engine, the vehicle includes high-performance ZF dampers at both axles, Brembo brakes with gold calipers, and a rear differential case equipped with cooling fins—borrowed directly from the race car. These components work in unison to enhance handling, braking, and overall track performance.
Aerodynamics and Styling
Visually, the STI Sport Type RA stands out with its aggressive aesthetic. The most prominent feature is the massive carbon rear wing, which dramatically increases downforce. Additional STI-branded components—front and rear under spoilers, an upgraded muffler, and a sway bar—further sharpen the car’s appearance and aerodynamics.
Inside, the cabin receives special touches, including red stitching on the fabric seats and a unique engine plaque. Black door handles complete the exterior styling.
Transmission and Chassis Upgrades
The STI Sport Type RA comes exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox, featuring a shift assist function. This system automates rev-matching for both upshifts and downshifts, allowing for smoother transitions without lifting off the accelerator.
To improve chassis rigidity, Subaru has added a draw stiffener, reducing flex during cornering.
Pricing and Availability
The STI Sport Type RA starts at 4,972,000 yen (approximately $32,100) for the version without the rear wing. Adding the prominent aerodynamic element increases the price to 5,478,000 yen ($35,400).
However, securing one will require more than just money. Subaru is employing a lottery system, with applications open until November 30. The limited production run ensures exclusivity, making this edition highly sought after by enthusiasts. Subaru will display the model at Fuji Speedway during the final round of the Super Taikyu Series this weekend.
The STI Sport Type RA represents a significant upgrade for the BRZ, bridging the gap between street performance and race-inspired engineering. The combination of mechanical enhancements, aggressive styling, and limited availability makes it a standout edition in the sports coupe segment
