Sony and Honda Halt Afeela Electric Vehicle Project

Sony Honda Mobility has cancelled development of the Afeela 1 electric sedan and its planned SUV counterpart, following Honda’s broader pullback from electric vehicle (EV) initiatives in the United States. The decision impacts pre-order customers, who will receive full refunds for reservation fees.

Context of the Cancellation

This move comes after Honda announced it would discontinue three EV models originally slated for production in the US. The joint venture between Sony and Honda aimed to leverage Honda’s manufacturing capabilities – specifically a plant in Ohio – but the partnership became untenable when Honda scaled back its EV commitments.

The core issue is access to critical components and technologies. According to Sony Honda Mobility, the Afeela project relied on assets and technology originally promised by Honda, which are now unavailable. Without these, the venture determined it had no viable path to market.

Afeela 1: Specifications and Challenges

The Afeela 1, first showcased in prototype form at CES 2023, was positioned as a premium EV with a dual-motor powertrain exceeding 400 horsepower. However, its projected range of around 300 miles and a starting price of nearly $90,000 raised questions about its competitiveness.

The vehicle’s design also faced criticism, with some observers describing it as aesthetically unremarkable, failing to stand out in a rapidly evolving EV landscape. The emphasis on advanced driver-assistance systems and onboard computing was not enough to compensate for the uninspired styling and middling performance.

Future Outlook

Despite the setback, Sony Honda Mobility states it will continue discussions with Sony and Honda regarding future business plans. However, the cancellation of both planned models suggests a significant challenge for the joint venture’s long-term viability.

The Afeela project’s failure underscores the complexities of EV development, where partnerships, technological dependencies, and market positioning all play critical roles in success. The venture’s future remains uncertain as it navigates a changing automotive landscape.
