Australia’s government is reassuring citizens that despite rising global tensions and surging fuel prices, domestic supply remains stable for now. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles emphasized today that current fuel imports are unchanged, though he acknowledged the ongoing Middle East conflict could disrupt supply if prolonged.
Strategic Reserves and Sulfur Levels
To mitigate potential shortages, the government has released 20% of the national fuel stockpile – approximately 760 million liters – prioritizing regions most in need. Further, a temporary allowance of higher-sulfur fuel (around 100 million liters monthly) will be diverted from exports to bolster domestic availability. Ampol Australia will distribute this supply, focusing on areas experiencing shortages and supporting independent fuel distributors.
Global Dependence and Price Hikes
Australia’s vulnerability stems from its heavy reliance on imported oil: roughly 90% of the nation’s supply comes from overseas, making it susceptible to geopolitical instability. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has noted that fuel retailers have already begun raising prices ahead of any actual supply disruptions, and reports indicate some consumers are stockpiling fuel in anticipation of further increases.
Military Intervention: Not on the Table
When questioned about deploying the Australian Defence Force to transport fuel, Marles stated this would depend on requests from state governments and that the primary responsibility rests with fuel companies. Despite the government’s measures, no fuel excise cuts are planned, even as pump prices climb.
“We will do everything in our power to respond to this situation, but cannot predict how the Middle East conflict will evolve,” said Marles, reiterating that current fuel imports remain consistent with pre-conflict levels.
The situation highlights Australia’s strategic dependence on global oil markets and underscores the need for diversified energy sources. While rationing is not currently in effect, the government’s actions reflect a cautious approach to a volatile situation that could change rapidly.
