A new electric vehicle (EV) brand, Firefly, owned by Chinese manufacturer Nio, is preparing to enter the Australian market. This marks yet another expansion of Chinese automotive presence, but Firefly distinguishes itself by targeting a less saturated segment: the small, quasi-premium hatchback category.
A Unique Player in a Crowded Market
Australia has seen a surge in Chinese automotive brands in recent years, primarily focused on mid-size SUVs and utes. Firefly’s debut model is an electric hatchback that aims for a slightly higher price point than the budget-focused BYD Dolphin Surf (sold as the Atto 1 in Australia), currently the cheapest EV available locally. The brand began its global rollout in 2025.
While the vehicle itself is ready for Australian roads, Nio is still finalizing a distribution partnership. The company is actively negotiating with potential importers to ensure a smooth and legally compliant launch. Currently, brands like Deepal and Xpeng rely on third-party distributors.
Safety and Specifications
Firefly has already undergone rigorous testing, including Euro NCAP assessments, achieving a five-star safety rating with scores of 96% for adult occupant protection and high marks across all categories. The company aims to meet the stringent safety standards of China, Europe, and Australia simultaneously.
The Firefly hatchback will come equipped with a single 105kW electric motor driving the rear wheels. It measures 4003mm in length, positioning it slightly larger than a Toyota Yaris. The vehicle’s dimensions will likely place it in competition with other electric hatchbacks like the BYD Dolphin, MG 4, and GWM Ora.
Pricing and Features
In Europe, the Firefly First Edition retails for around €29,900 (approximately A$53,300), making it A$7,000 more expensive than the BYD Dolphin Surf. The vehicle features a 41.2kWh battery offering up to 330km of WLTP range and supports fast charging up to 100kW DC.
Notable features include:
- MacPherson strut front and five-link rear suspension
- Unique circular LED lighting design
- A 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Recycled polyester upholstery with optional ventilated and massaging front seats
- Vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability for powering external devices
The Firefly offers 404 liters of cargo space, expandable to 1253 liters with the rear seats folded. Additional storage is available under the rear seats and in a 92-liter front trunk.
Nio’s Broader Strategy
Firefly is not the only spinoff brand from Nio. The company also launched Onvo, a more affordable EV focused on European markets. Nio has trademarked both brands in Australia, suggesting further expansion plans. The possibility of introducing Nio’s battery-as-a-service (BaaS) program, allowing battery swapping, remains unclear for the Australian market.
Firefly’s launch marks another step in the increasing influence of Chinese automotive manufacturers in Australia, offering consumers more options in the growing EV segment.
