Mercedes-Benz Prepares Electric C-Class to Rival BMW i3

Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to challenge BMW’s recently unveiled electric i3 sedan with its own all-electric C-Class EQ. Set to be revealed in April, the vehicle will directly compete with the i3, mirroring BMW’s strategy by offering an electric version alongside the traditional combustion engine model.

Design Shift: Back Towards Conventional

The C-Class EQ marks a departure from Mercedes’ more experimental “EQ” design language seen in models like the EQS and EQE. While early prototypes suggested a radical shift, Mercedes appears to be adopting a more conventional sedan silhouette, featuring a longer hood and lower profile. The front grille will be prominently illuminated with hundreds of LEDs, similar to the GLC EQ, but remains a divisive design choice.

Performance and Technology

Underpinning the C-Class EQ is Mercedes-Benz’s MB.EA architecture—the same platform used in the GLC EQ—incorporating 800-volt technology for faster charging. It will also include a two-speed transmission to enhance efficiency and performance, along with optional rear-wheel steering and adaptive air suspension.

Range and Power

The C-Class EQ is expected to offer battery options ranging from 64 kWh to 94 kWh. The C 400 4MATIC Electric variant is projected to achieve a range of up to 450 miles (724 km) on the WLTP cycle, slightly less than the BMW i3’s 559 miles (900 km). However, the Mercedes will still be competitive with a peak DC charging rate of 330 kW.

The dual-motor powertrain will deliver around 482 hp and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque, enabling acceleration from 0-62 mph in under 4.5 seconds. Pricing is estimated between $50,000 and $60,000, with a market launch expected in late 2026.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class EQ represents a strategic move by the German automaker to directly compete in the growing electric sedan market. By blending a more familiar design with cutting-edge technology, Mercedes aims to appeal to buyers seeking a balance between tradition and innovation.
