MG to Launch New Compact EV Rivaling Renault 5 by 2027

11

MG is preparing to unveil a concept for a new small electric vehicle (EV) at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this July, positioning itself to compete directly with models like the Renault 5, BYD Dolphin Surf, and Volkswagen’s upcoming ID Polo. The production version, likely to be named the MG 2, is slated for release towards the end of 2027.

Positioning in the Market

The MG 2 will slot beneath the existing MG 4 Urban in MG’s lineup, offering a more affordable entry point into the EV market. This move reflects a broader trend towards downsizing EVs to increase affordability as Europe transitions toward electric mobility. The Renault 5’s success has demonstrated a stronger-than-expected demand for small, budget-friendly EVs, bolstering MG’s confidence in this segment.

Technical Specifications and Platform

The MG 2 is expected to share the same front-wheel-drive E3 electric platform as the MG 4 Urban, currently priced from £23,495 with a 42.8kWh battery. It may also adopt the Urban’s upcoming semi-solid-state battery technology, which enhances cold-weather performance and improves cell safety through the use of a gel-like electrolyte. This is significant because battery performance in colder climates remains a key concern for EV adoption in many regions.

Expansion Plans and European Focus

MG plans to expand its European model range to up to 18 vehicles within the next two years. The MG 2 will feature a design more tailored to European tastes, developed by the UK-based design team. This shift emphasizes MG’s commitment to growing its presence in European markets, including Italy and other small-car focused regions.

Production and Potential Plant

MG is considering producing the MG 2 at its planned new European plant, potentially operational as early as 2027, to avoid tariffs on China-built EVs. The exact location of this plant remains unannounced. Alongside the MG 2, MG will also introduce the larger S9 plug-in hybrid SUV later this year, which was prematurely revealed in Euro NCAP crash test results.

Current Sales and Trends

Currently, MG’s UK sales are dominated by the HS and ZS SUVs, primarily in hybrid formats. Electric sales decreased by 23% last year, now accounting for just 20% of the brand’s 85,000 total units sold. However, recent additions to the EV lineup, including the S6, S5, and MG 4 Urban, signal a renewed push towards electrification.

The MG 2 represents a strategic move to capitalize on the growing demand for affordable EVs in Europe, leveraging a proven platform and adapting to regional preferences. This expansion is driven by the success of competitors like the Renault 5, which has proven there is a significant appetite for smaller, more accessible electric cars.
