Mercedes-AMG is pushing the boundaries of performance with its upcoming GT Track Sport, a vehicle so focused on speed that it completely omits a rear window. This isn’t a design oversight; it’s a deliberate choice to maximize aerodynamics for both track and road. The car will serve as the basis for the next-generation GT3 race car and the most extreme Black Series model ever created.
Engineering for Extreme Performance
The development of this high-performance machine is unusual because the road-legal version is being engineered to homologate the next GT3 racer. This means the street car must meet the same aggressive specifications as its competition-ready counterpart. Prototypes have been spotted undergoing rigorous testing at iconic tracks including the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Immendingen, and Portimão.
The car’s exterior features a massive swan-neck rear wing that requires a solid panel where a rear window would typically be. This setup, similar to Porsche’s 911 GT3 RS with the Manthey kit, provides maximum support for the wing and minimizes drag. Additional aerodynamic elements include a large front splitter, canards, a vented hood, and a highly aggressive rear diffuser. Side-exiting exhaust pipes further emphasize the car’s uncompromising track focus.
Power and Design Philosophy
Unlike the plug-in hybrid GT 63 S E Performance, the Track Sport will utilize a new version of AMG’s flat-plane crank V8 engine. The goal is pure, unadulterated lightweight performance with racing DNA at its core. The car’s chassis is designed for optimal weight distribution, and various weight-saving measures will be implemented throughout.
Mercedes-AMG Chairman Michael Schiebe stated that the company is developing “the most extreme Black Series ever,” aiming to set new records on both the racetrack and the road. The CONCEPT AMG GT TRACK SPORT isn’t merely a concept; it’s a technology demonstrator and a commitment to exceeding performance expectations.
“At AMG, we develop vehicles to exceed expectations. And that is exactly what the future Black Series and the new GT3 will do.” – Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH
This new AMG GT Black Series will likely challenge rivals like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and the Ford Mustang GTD. The lack of a rear window and other extreme modifications illustrate AMG’s dedication to uncompromising performance.
The final product promises to be a brutal, track-focused machine that leaves no room for compromise. Expect further details as testing progresses and the car approaches its official release.
