McLaren Prepares to Conquer the SUV Market with Hybrid V-8 Powerhouse

McLaren is finally ready to venture into the luxury performance SUV market. Following years of speculation, the British supercar manufacturer has reportedly revealed its first high-riding model slated for a 2028 debut. This new SUV, codenamed “P47,” will boast a hybrid V-8 engine and challenge established players like Porsche in a segment increasingly focused on power and athleticism.

Details about the P47 were shared with McLaren dealers at a November 11th event held at the McLaren Creation Centre in Bicester, England. Sources present described the SUV as a five-seater with dimensions comparable to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT but slightly larger. The clay model displayed showcased imposing proportions and muscular lines riding on colossal 24-inch wheels. One attendee told Automotive News that the P47 is designed to “have real presence” and stand out in the crowded luxury SUV landscape.

While McLaren hasn’t officially confirmed production plans for the P47, this unveiling strongly suggests its imminent arrival. The company had previously hinted at expanding beyond its core two-seater sports car lineup with CEO Nick Collins stating earlier this year that a model offering “more than two seats” was in development.

The 2028 SUV launch is part of McLaren’s ambitious product strategy extending through 2030, promising new models every year until then. The pipeline includes a hybrid coupe boasting nearly 800 horsepower expected to hit the market in 2027. This high-performance machine will be powered by a V-6 engine paired with a mild-hybrid system. Also planned for 2027 is a final edition of the current McLaren 750S, distinguished by a prominent roof scoop and an enlarged rear wing.

Interestingly, despite recent speculation surrounding a fully electric supercar from McLaren, there was no mention of this model during the dealer meeting. CEO Collins confirmed earlier in the year that an electric performance car is indeed under development but emphasized it’s not a top priority for immediate release. Electric enthusiasts will have to wait patiently for their high-performance zero-emission McLaren experience.
