Kia Australia has confirmed it will not import the high-performance EV5 GT variant of its popular electric SUV. The decision stems from logistical challenges and cost concerns related to sourcing the model, which is currently produced exclusively in Korea.
Production Hurdles & Pricing
According to Roland Rivero, Kia Australia’s general manager for product planning, introducing the Korean-built EV5 GT would disrupt the company’s current supply chain. The existing EV5 models sold in Australia are manufactured in China, providing a cost-effective solution for the local market.
“The EV5 GT is difficult to justify due to its Korean origin. We wouldn’t be able to match the current price point if we imported it from Korea, especially with the complexity of dual sourcing,” Rivero stated.
Effectively, Kia cannot offer the GT trim at a competitive price without sacrificing the affordability that has made the standard EV5 a strong seller.
Performance Parity & Added Features
Interestingly, the EV5 GT’s performance figures are comparable to the Chinese-made EV5 AWD Long Range already available in Australia. Both versions utilize dual-motor setups capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in roughly 6.1–6.3 seconds.
However, the European-spec EV5 GT includes upgrades not found in the Australian model: Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV tires, sport bucket seats, a tuned chassis, and electronically controlled suspension borrowed from Genesis vehicles. These enhancements justify the higher price point in other markets, but not in Australia, given the existing offering.
Future GT Models Under Consideration
Despite passing on the EV5 GT, Kia Australia is evaluating the potential for launching the EV3 GT and EV4 GT models, which were also unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show. The decision will hinge on whether these vehicles can be integrated into the existing production network without significant cost increases.
Currently, Kia Australia offers the high-performance EV6 GT and will soon release the EV9 GT later this year. The EV5 GT, however, remains unavailable due to the logistical and financial realities of importing it from Korea.
