Jeep Considers Frunk-Mounted Winch for Electric Off-Roaders

22

Jeep is exploring a novel approach to winches in its electric vehicle lineup: integrating them into the front trunk, or “frunk,” space. This design could resolve long-standing issues with winch placement in traditional off-road vehicles, where front-mounted winches add weight and are vulnerable to damage.

The Problem with Traditional Winch Placement

Currently, winches are typically bolted onto or within the front bumper of off-road vehicles. While accessible, this placement introduces several drawbacks. Heavy-duty winches can weigh over 40 kilograms (90 lbs), shifting the vehicle’s weight forward and potentially impacting handling. Moreover, exposed winches are prone to damage from impacts while navigating rough terrain.

Jeep’s Patent Solution: The Frunk-Mounted Winch

A recent Jeep patent filing reveals a design where the winch is housed within the frunk, positioned above the front electric motor. The winch cable would then be routed through the center of the grille, maintaining functionality while mitigating the downsides of traditional setups. The illustrations in the patent show this concept applied to the upcoming Jeep Recon, the company’s first fully electric “Trail Rated” model.

Why This Matters

This isn’t just about convenience. Shifting the winch’s weight inward and lower in the chassis improves weight distribution, which enhances handling and reduces stress on the front suspension. The frunk also provides a degree of protection against trail hazards.

The Recon EV, as currently designed, already has the necessary space to accommodate a winch above the front axle motor. Jeep has not yet confirmed whether this will be an available option, but it’s likely to be a premium accessory if offered.

The Future of Off-Road EVs

Jeep’s exploration of frunk-mounted winches highlights how automakers are adapting off-road technology to the unique constraints and opportunities of electric vehicles. While the Recon EV didn’t mention this feature at its reveal, the patent suggests Jeep is seriously considering it as a way to enhance the capabilities of its electric off-roaders.

Integrating a winch into the frunk could set a new standard for how EVs tackle challenging terrain, balancing functionality with improved handling and durability.
