Jaguar abruptly canceled development on four entirely new vehicles – including replacements for the XF, XJ, F-Pace, and F-Type – as it pivoted toward an electric-only lineup. The move, revealed by former design chief Ian Callum, represents a high-stakes gamble that could reshape the brand’s future.
The Canceled Lineup
Before committing fully to electric vehicles, Jaguar had concrete plans for next-generation versions of its core models. These included:
- A New XF: Intended to compete with the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Audi A6. It could have included a wagon variant, a nod to previous generations.
- A Revised XJ: The flagship sedan was nearly complete before being scrapped.
- A Second-Generation F-Pace: The company’s best-selling SUV was put on hold to prioritize the Type 00 EV.
- A Successor to the F-Type: This sports car was also abandoned, despite being in development.
The All-In EV Bet
Jaguar’s commitment to EVs is absolute. The brand has no plans for hybrids and is betting heavily on the Type 00, a radically styled electric grand tourer slated to launch in 2027. Pricing is expected to start above $100,000, as Jaguar aims to compete with Bentley rather than its previous German rivals. An electric SUV will follow by the end of 2027.
The Risks and Dealer Concerns
Jaguar’s strategy is a dramatic departure from industry trends. While many automakers are hedging their bets by reintroducing hybrid options, Jaguar is doubling down on EVs, despite internal estimates suggesting that 85% of its existing customer base may not return. Some dealers are openly skeptical, with one anonymously telling Automobilwoche that “there is no business case for the brand” under these conditions.
The all-electric transformation represents a bold move, but one that could alienate loyal customers and leave Jaguar reliant on a new, untested market segment.
Ultimately, Jaguar is taking an extreme risk to redefine itself as a luxury EV brand. Whether this strategy will pay off remains to be seen, but the company has made its choice: all-electric or nothing.
