Chinese automaker Geely is preparing to challenge the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser with a new hybrid 4×4, set for a UK launch in 2028. The vehicle, previewed as the Galaxy Cruiser concept, is expected to closely resemble the show car revealed at the 2025 Shanghai Motor Show, with only minor changes to the production version.
Design Echoes Iconic 4x4s
The Galaxy Cruiser’s design deliberately draws inspiration from legendary off-roaders like the Defender, Mercedes G-Wagon, and Ford Bronco. Geely’s design chief Flavien Dachet acknowledges this, stating that classic 4x4s follow a similar formula.
“The codes are the same… It’s a matter of how we interpret it in a way that is recognisable.”
Given China’s lack of established off-road heritage, Geely’s approach involves studying and adapting proven designs, rather than innovating from scratch. The concept features design cues such as pannier boxes and side ladders, mirroring the Defender’s aesthetic, while also incorporating unique elements like 3D daytime running lights influenced by Chinese dragon imagery.
Interior and Technology
Geely intends to offer a more refined interior than the Defender, focusing on comfort and premium materials. The concept showcased physical controls, including a Lamborghini Urus-inspired “control island” with a large gear selector and drive mode dials.
The production model will be based on Geely’s advanced GEA Evo platform, already used in the Galaxy M9 SUV. This platform supports technologies like steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, and four-wheel steering for enhanced maneuverability, including crab-walking and tank turns.
Hybrid Powertrain and Off-Road Capability
The Galaxy Cruiser is expected to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain with an AI-controlled system that optimizes performance based on terrain. The concept boasts 858bhp from a 1.5-liter engine paired with three electric motors, exceeding the Defender OCTA by approximately 200bhp.
Geely has pushed the architecture to maximize off-road performance, with high ground clearance and large wheels. Testing in Chinese deserts has demonstrated the vehicle’s handling in challenging conditions, with a wading depth comparable to the Defender 110.
Future Expansion
Geely views the Galaxy Cruiser as a potential gateway to further expansion into the 4×4 market. The company is already exploring additional off-road models, with development contingent on the public’s response to the production version.
“If the response is positive, we have a lot more coming.”
The success of this initial foray could lead to a broader lineup of off-road vehicles from Geely, capitalizing on the growing demand for rugged, capable SUVs.
