Cupra Raval EV: First Look at VW Group’s New Affordable Electric Hatch

14

Cupra will unveil its new entry-level electric vehicle, the Raval, on April 9th, marking a significant step in Volkswagen Group’s push for more accessible EVs. This compact hatchback is the first model to use the Group’s upgraded MEB+ platform, designed to underpin a new range of affordable electric cars including the VW ID. Polo, ID. Cross, and Skoda Epiq.

Pricing and Market Positioning

The Raval is expected to start around €26,000 in Europe (approximately $43,422 AUD). While this price may not appear groundbreaking on direct conversion, it positions the vehicle competitively below the current Cupra Leon in Spain, where the Leon begins at €31,632 ($52,828 AUD). The affordability is key: VW Group is clearly targeting a wider audience with this new EV lineup.

Trim Levels and Specifications

Cupra will launch the Raval with three distinct trims: Dynamic, Dynamic Plus, and VZ Extreme.

  • Dynamic: Features a 155kW front electric motor and a WLTP range of up to 450km. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, heated power-adjustable front seats, a reversing camera, and a six-speaker sound system.
  • Dynamic Plus: Adds matrix LED headlights, keyless access, a 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system, ambient lighting, satellite navigation, 360-degree cameras, and Travel Assist semi-autonomous driving.
  • VZ Extreme: Offers a slightly more powerful 166kW motor with an electronic limited-slip differential, but range drops to 400km WLTP. Additional features include a fixed panoramic glass roof, distinctive Sulfur exterior accents, and sportier Cup Bucket seats with driver memory.

The Raval will be available with 38kWh and 56kWh battery options, the same as the upcoming ID. Polo. Production will take place at VW’s Martorell facility in Spain alongside the standard Volkswagen version.

Australian Availability

Cupra Australia has expressed interest in bringing the Raval to the local market, but a definitive launch timeline remains unconfirmed. Given the planned European rollout in late 2026, Australia is likely to see the Raval arrive no earlier than 2027. Pricing will depend on local market conditions, but speculation suggests a starting price around $30,000 AUD is possible.

The Raval will be positioned as the entry point in Cupra’s EV lineup, slotting under the Born. This new model represents a crucial effort by VW Group to democratize electric vehicle ownership by offering a genuinely affordable option in a growing segment.
