BYD Atto 3 Evo: Improved Range and Tech, But Still Lacking Refinement

The updated BYD Atto 3 Evo represents a significant step forward for the Chinese automaker in the UK market, offering increased range, faster charging, and enhanced technology. However, while the upgrades are welcome, the vehicle still falls short of delivering the premium experience its nearly £43,000 price tag demands.

Rapid Growth in a Competitive Market

BYD’s arrival in the UK just three years ago has been nothing short of explosive. The company has quickly established itself as a major player, surpassing established brands like Citroen and Dacia in sales volume. This aggressive expansion, with over 130 dealerships and 51,000 cars sold in 2025 alone, highlights the brand’s ambition and rapid market penetration. The Atto 3 Evo is part of this push, building on the success of the original Atto 3, now with substantial improvements.

Powertrain and Performance Upgrades

The most notable change is the new 74.8kWh battery, which increases the car’s range from 260 to 316 miles. While not class-leading—rivals like the Renault Scenic offer up to 381 miles—the improvement is substantial. More importantly, the Evo now features an 800V electrical system, enabling up to 220kW charging speeds. This cuts charge times from 10% to 80% down to just 25 minutes, a significant advantage over the original model’s slower 110kW peak.

The powertrain options are also more potent. The base model now produces 303bhp, cutting the 0-62mph time to 5.5 seconds. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant goes even further, delivering a staggering 443bhp and 560Nm of torque. This allows for a 0-62mph sprint in just 3.9 seconds, matching the acceleration of a Porsche 911 Carrera.

Driving Dynamics and Handling Concerns

Despite the raw power, the Atto 3 Evo struggles to deliver a refined driving experience. The chassis, while upgraded with a more sophisticated five-link rear suspension, feels overwhelmed by the performance. The car lacks the tuned handling characteristics found in competitors like the Tesla Model Y Performance, resulting in jittery ride quality and vague steering.

The high-powered dual-motor variant suffers from this most acutely. The car’s excessive power is difficult to manage, making it easy to exceed speed limits unintentionally. While the ride is good at absorbing potholes, the overall feel is unsettled and unnerving, with body roll during cornering.

Interior and Technology Improvements

Inside, the Atto 3 Evo has been redesigned to reduce some of the original’s more polarizing design choices. The rippling dashboard is gone, replaced by a more conservative layout. A larger 8.8-inch driver’s display and a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen are now standard. The infotainment system now includes built-in Google Maps and access to the Google Play Store, enhancing usability.

Other interior upgrades include improved headrests and a redesigned center console with a column-mounted gear selector, creating more storage space. Build quality remains a mixed bag, with some soft-touch materials offset by cheap plastics and imitation leather. However, the second-row seating offers ample space, and the boot capacity has increased to 490 liters (1,390 liters with seats down), making it competitive in its class.

Value and Pricing Considerations

The base rear-drive Design model starts at £38,990, putting it in line with mid-range Skoda Elroq or Renault Scenic models. The higher-spec Excellence AWD variant costs nearly £43,000, placing it in direct competition with the Tesla Model Y. However, the Atto 3 Evo does not deliver the same level of refinement, technology, or driving enjoyment for the price.

Final Verdict

The BYD Atto 3 Evo offers substantial improvements over its predecessor, particularly in range and charging speed. However, it still lacks the polish and driving dynamics needed to justify its high price tag. The rear-drive model offers better value, but the ride quality is slightly worse. Ultimately, the Atto 3 Evo is a solid but unremarkable family SUV that needs further refinement to truly compete with established rivals.
