BMW’s compact electric SUV, the iX1, is due for a complete redesign in 2027, mirroring the advanced technology and styling cues of the larger iX3. This overhaul isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a fundamental shift driven by BMW’s ambitious rollout of its new ‘Neue Klasse’ platform across the entire vehicle lineup.
The Shift to Neue Klasse: Why It Matters
BMW is preparing for a significant wave of new models—over 40 in the next two years—and the iX1 is at the forefront of this transformation. The current iX1, introduced in 2022, served as an initial foray into electric compact SUVs. However, the upcoming version will be built from the ground up using the Neue Klasse architecture. This is crucial because BMW aims to standardize this platform across all models by 2027, regardless of powertrain.
Design and Aerodynamics: Echoing the iX3
Spy shots confirm that the next-generation iX1 will closely resemble the iX3 in design. Expect smoother bodywork, a more aerodynamic shape, and a distinctive front grille that pays homage to classic BMW models like the 2002 and E30 3 Series. Flush-fitting door handles, a swept-back windscreen, and optional aero-optimized wheel covers will further enhance efficiency. The rear will feature wide lights similar to those on the iX3, along with a roof spoiler and trim-specific bumper designs.
Powertrain and Efficiency: A Leap Forward
The Neue Klasse iX1 is expected to deliver significant gains in range and efficiency. The latest iX3 boasts a 500-mile range thanks to its 108.7 kWh battery, and while the iX1 will use a smaller battery due to its shorter wheelbase, it will benefit from the platform’s improvements. Expect a substantial increase over the current iX1’s 293-mile range.
The iX1 will be available in both single- and dual-motor configurations, with rear-wheel drive as standard. The new eDrive motors offer up to 402 bhp, though the iX1 likely won’t reach the 463 bhp of the iX3 xDrive50. These motors reduce energy losses by 40% and weight by 10%, further boosting efficiency.
Charging Capabilities: Future-Proofing with 800V Architecture
The Neue Klasse platform utilizes an 800V electrical architecture, enabling a maximum charge rate of up to 400kW. While not reaching the iX3’s ultra-rapid charging times, the iX1 should easily surpass the current model’s 130kW rate.
Interior Revolution: Panoramic iDrive and OS X
Inside, the new iX1 will feature BMW’s latest panoramic iDrive system, including a full-width display and a large touchscreen. The infotainment will run on Operating System X (iDrive 10), and higher trims may include a head-up display. The interior will also incorporate BMW’s ‘HypersonX’ audio system, designed to enhance the driving experience.
The Neue Klasse platform allows for more efficient packaging of the battery and powertrain, potentially increasing interior space. Despite this, the boot capacity may decrease slightly from 550 to 520 liters.
Release and Pricing: A 2027 Launch
The next-generation iX1 is expected to launch in 2027, with pricing likely starting under £40,000 for base models. Higher-spec, dual-motor versions could exceed £50,000. BMW’s plans for the gasoline-powered X1 align with the next-generation 3 and 5 Series, which will share design elements with the all-electric i3 and i5.
The upcoming BMW iX1 represents a significant step towards the brand’s fully electric future, delivering improved performance, efficiency, and design. By adopting the Neue Klasse platform, BMW aims to set a new standard for compact electric SUVs.
