Over 200,000 Cars Failed MOTs in 2025 Due to Simple Washer Jet Failures

More than 200,000 vehicles failed their mandatory MOT (Ministry of Transport) test in the UK last year due to faulty windscreen washer jets – a remarkably preventable issue. Official data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, analyzed by eBay, shows that nearly 592 cars per day were rejected for this single reason.

The Surprising Scale of the Problem

The fact that a readily fixable component caused so many failures highlights a gap in driver awareness and vehicle maintenance. eBay’s research found that 26% of UK drivers were unaware that faulty washer jets could lead to an MOT failure. Even more concerning, 69% of motorists lack confidence in repairing such a simple part, despite replacement jets being available on eBay for as little as £1.99.

Why does this matter? Because working windscreen washers are critical for safe driving, ensuring clear visibility in rain, snow, or when visibility is reduced by road grime.

Lack of Routine Checks Contributes to Failures

The problem isn’t just about affordability or repair skills; it’s also about neglect. 13% of drivers admit to never checking their washer jets, while 21% only inspect them when an MOT or service is already scheduled. This reactive approach is clearly not working, as evidenced by the high failure rate.

“Small and simple parts like washer jets can go under the radar,” says Abir Tewari, UK Director of Commercial Operations at eBay. “Motorists should routinely check them as part of their regular vehicle maintenance.”

Preventable Failures: A Call for Proactive Maintenance

This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a wake-up call for drivers. The 200,000 failures caused by washer jets are entirely preventable with a simple, low-cost fix. By making routine checks a habit, and by recognizing that basic repairs don’t require a mechanic, drivers can avoid unnecessary retests and ensure their vehicles meet safety standards.

Ultimately, the high number of washer jet failures underscores a larger issue: basic vehicle maintenance is being overlooked, resulting in avoidable inconvenience and expense for thousands of drivers.
